Intergenerational childcare hub to open early next year
Construction continues at Canadore College’s new daycare facility in North Bay, with an expected opening in early 2025.
The former E.T. Carmichael school was purchased from the Near North District School Board to create an intergenerational hub for students and the community, with children interacting with seniors.
In partnership with The Lindsay Weld Centre for Children, officials previously announced 187 new licensed childcare spaces are being created.
They say the centre aims to support families and promote early childhood development in the community.
As work on the facility continues, the college also planted trees at the Chapais Street property this week.
“This is an opportunity to bring more natural elements to our beautiful new location, but to also ensure that the children in our care had a chance to see the grounds grow with them,” says Shane Mercer, Executive Director for the Lindsay Weld Centre for Children. “Being able to plant trees that our children can watch over the years grow bigger and bigger was something we couldn’t miss.”
The tree planting event was funded through $3,500 in prize money won after Canadore was named the Tree Canada’s 2023 National Tree Day winner.
The college was honoured after 50 students, employees and community members planted 110 trees on campus last year.
