Investigation into hundreds of Canadian fraud victims leads to charges

By Richard Coffin

The RCMP’s cybercrime unit says a Toronto couple is facing charges after more than 570 Canadian victims were defrauded out of millions of dollars.

Police say it’s believed the two are among the world’s top 50 most active subscribers of a call spoofing website that allows fraudsters to impersonate trusted corporations.

Several Canadian policing agencies, including the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre in North Bay, were involved in the international investigation.

Police in the UK and the Netherlands were involved, along with EUROPOL.

The pair were arrested Wednesday with police saying a ‘trove’ of electronic devices were seized.

They expect the number of victims to increase.

Officials say the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre processed 49,432 reports in 2024 representing 34,621 victims who lost a total of $638 million.
