James Harney

James Harney

Peacefully in his sleep with his beautiful wife Helen by his side, James (Jim) Edward Harney passed away at home at the age of 87 on December 16, 2024.

Jim was born on September 1, 1937 in Port Arthur, ON.  He spent a great deal of his life in Thunder Bay, ON, with some shorter moves in between, before relocating to North Bay, ON in 1983.  Jim’s career with the Ministry of Government Services began in Thunder Bay and continued in North Bay after he was transferred.  He retired in 2001.

Jim’s family, who he raised with his wife Helen, was his priority in life.   He worked hard throughout his life and always provided for and protected:  Cindy (Brian), Joanne (Jim), Barbi (Joe), Kim (Demetrius), Jimmy (Tracey) and Laura (Troy).  He will be remembered for his witty sense of humour, his strong work ethic, the passion he had for hobbies he enjoyed, and the pride he took in his home and yard.

His grandchildren Lauren, Alysia, Steven, Josh, Kelsi (Dustin), Jamie (Jon), Andrew, Eric (Megan), Ashley (Jarod), Addison, Jillian, Josie, Lydia and Benjamin all brought a smile to his face when he saw them.  His first great granddaughter Sutton was greeted with a tender touch and given the Harney approval when she visited in November.

Jim is predeceased by his parents Acy Harney and Helen Gilbert Harney Whiteman, as well as his much loved son Jimmy Harney.  He leaves behind his wife Helen Untinen Harney, who he was married to for 64 years and who cared for him completely.  His sister Joan Harney Hughes and brother Gibby Harney and sister-in-laws Iris Slongo and Leni Untinen also mourn his passing.  In addition to those in his immediate family, Jim will be remembered by Michael, Harvey, Barry, Tony, Shelley, Jana, long-time friend and co-worker Pam, friends, extended family and neighbours.

The family wishes to thank the medical professionals who provided care to Dad, especially in his later years.  The daily visits by Personal Support Workers and Physiotherapists, in particular Jessica and James, brought happiness and support to him.

A family graveside service and internment will be held in May at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Bay, followed by a reception at the Harney home.
