Jeanne d'Arc Newton

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Jeanne d’Arc Newton (née Courchesne) on November 14, 2025, at Cassellholme in North Bay.

Dear mother of Claire Johnson (Raymond) of Mississauga, Lise Morris (Patrick) of North Bay, Pierre Charette (Mariela) of Victoria Harbour and Lynn Sewchand (Lionel) of Stoney Creek.

The joy of Jeanne d’Arc’s life was her nine grandchildren: Sean, Tanya, Stacey, Sam, Kristyn, Daniela, Emma, Natalie and Mathieu and her six great-grandchildren: Taylor, Brooklyn, Isabella, Jackson, Avery and Karsen. She took great pleasure in assigning each of them a specific colour and what she called a “fantasy name”.

Predeceased by her parents Télesphore Courchesne and Marie-Anne (Aubin), her brothers Narcisse, Gérard, Roland, Rhéal, Lionel, Gérald and sisters Georgiana, little Agnès and Reina. She leaves behind her siblings Agnès, Thérèse, Claude (Jeannine) and Jean-Paul as well as many nieces and nephews.

Born on July 11, 1935, she was the youngest daughter of Télesphore and Marie-Anne Courchesne. Mom often told the story of being chased by the mean rooster and being teased mercilessly by her older brothers while growing up on the farm in Lavigne. She attained her nursing diploma (RNA) in Sturgeon Falls in 1955 and worked for Dr Paiement before marrying our father Roger Charette and moving to North Bay in 1957. After Dad left, she returned to the workforce fulltime at the Psychiatric Hospital until her retirement in 1990.

She married Norm Newton in 1986 and they had 16 wonderful years together until his death in 2002. She and Norm spent many winters at St Pete Beach, Florida and later in Portugal. They also visited many places in South America, the Caribbean and Europe.

Jeanne d’Arc enjoyed close friendships with a variety of people. She loved playing bridge and Scrabble, reading, singing in the church choir and learning to play piano. She watched Jeopardy and Alex Trebek faithfully every night. She loved to entertain friends and family with a good meal and perhaps wine, but always a good dessert.

The family would like to thank everyone who knew and loved Jeanne d’Arc - and there were many of you - for your words of encouragement and love. Her family at Cassellholme will forever be in our hearts. Extra special thanks to Père Lajeunesse and Céline Mayer of St Vincent de Paul Church for your tenderness towards our mother.

The family will receive visitors at McGuinty Funeral Home Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at 2-4pm and 6-8pm.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Vincent de Paul Church Thursday, November 20, 2025 at 11am. Cremation to follow.

Chère mère de Claire Johnson (Raymond) de Mississauga, Lise Morris (Patrick) de North Bay, Pierre Charette (Mariela) de Victoria Harbour et Lynn Sewchand (Lionel) de Stoney Creek.

Fière grandmère de neuf petits-enfants: Sean, Tanya, Stacey, Sam, Kristyn, Daniela, Emma, Natalie et Mathieu, et ses six arrière petits-enfants: Taylor, Brooklyn, Isabella, Jackson, Avery et Karsen. C’est avec un grand plaisir qu’elle leur a attribuer une couleur spécifique et ce qu’elle a appelé un « nom fantaisie ».

Précédée par ses parents Télesphore Courchesne et Marie-Anne (Aubin), ses frères Narcisse, Gérard, Roland, Rhéal, Lionel, Gérald et ses sœurs Georgiana, la petite Agnès et Reina, elle laisse dans le deuil Agnès, Thérèse, Claude (Jeannine) et Jean-Paul ainsi que plusieurs nièces et neveux.

Née le 11 juillet 1935, elle était la plus jeune des filles de Télesphore et Marie-Anne Courchesne. Jeanne d'Arc racontait souvent l'histoire d'être pourchassée par le méchant coq et d'être taquinée sans pitié par ses frères aînés. Maman a obtenu son diplôme infirmière auxiliaire autorisée (ARN) à Sturgeon Falls en 1955. Elle a travaillé pour le Docteur Paiement avant de marier notre père Roger Charette et déménager à North Bay en 1957. Après le départ de Papa, Maman a retourné au travail à plein temps à l’hôpital psychiatrique jusqu’à sa retraite en 1990.

Elle a marié Norm Newton en 1986 et ils ont vécu 16 joyeuses années ensemble jusqu’à sa mort en 2002. Ils ont passé plusieurs hivers en Floride à St Pete Beach et plus tard au Portugal ainsi que plusieurs voyages à l’Amérique du Sud, les Caraïbes et en Europe.

Jeanne d'Arc entretenait des liens d'amitié étroits avec une variété de personnes. Elle aimait jouer du bridge et Scrabble, lire, chanter dans la chorale de l'église et apprendre à jouer du piano. Elle regardait fidèlement Jeopardy et Alex Trebek chaque soir. Elle aimait divertir ses amis et sa famille avec un bon repas et peut-être du vin, mais toujours un bon dessert.

La famille aimerait remercier tous ceux qui connaissaient et aimaient Jeanne d’Arc - vous êtes nombreux - pour vos paroles d'encouragement et d'amour. Sa famille à Cassellholme sera à jamais dans nos cœurs. Un merci spécial au Père Lajeunesse et Céline Mayer de la paroisse St-Vincent de Paul pour votre tendresse envers notre mère.

La famille recevra les visiteurs au salon funéraire McGuinty mercredi, le 19 novembre, 2025 de 1400 à 1600hrs et de 1800 à 2000hrs.

La messe funéraire aura lieu à l’Église St-Vincent de Paul jeudi, le 20 novembre, 2025 à 1100hrs.

Au lieu de fleurs, les dons de votre choix sera bien apprécié.

Autant qu’elle nous manquera, les souvenirs de Maman nous accompagneront pour toujours.
