John Staines
The family announces with sorrow the passing of John Stewart Staines, at the age of 91, on December 6, 2025, at Northern Heights Community, after a long illness.
He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 63 years Ann (nee O’Shaughnessy). He was the cherished father of David (Jen) of St Jacobs, Deanne Devine (Shawn), of North Bay, and Erin Staines (Herman Chan) of Richmond Hill. He was the proud grandfather of Justin Devine (Aline), and Colleen Irvine (Cody), Quinn and Max Staines. His four great grandchildren were a source of great joy to him, Livia and Layla Devine, and Brinley and Rylan Irvine.
John was pre-deceased by his parents Stirling and Margaret (Elrick), and his brother Douglas. He is survived by niece Joan Turnbull (Chris), nephew Douglas Staines (Jane), niece Kelly Clark (Dennis) their children, and their mother Geri.
Fondly remembered by his in-laws Pat Croteau (Pete), Carol O’Shaughnessy, John O’Shaughnessy (Debbie), and Paul Donnelly (Judy), and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Born in Sudbury, ON, John moved to Toronto area with his parents while young, later moved to Kitchener, ON for his high school years. John moved to North Bay, ON in 1959 where he met Ann and they married in 1962.A natural athlete, John excelled in many sports throughout his life in particular golf, curling, hockey, and was an NOHA referee for several years. He was also an avid fisherman, and spent many happy times fishing and duck hunting with his long time “Gronk” buddies.
Professionally, John spent many years as a respected sales representative with The Stevens Company, supplying medical and surgical supplies throughout Northern Ontario.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the team members at Northern Heights Community, and at NBRHC C1 doctors and staff for their compassionate care.
The funeral will be held on Friday, December 12th, 2025 at Holy Name of Jesus Church at 11:00am. Reception to follow in the church hall following mass. If desired, in lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of John to your favourite charity would be appreciated.
