The Powassan Voodoos saw defenceman Marcus Krats lead a rush and strike moments into overtime in a 4-3 triumph over the Hearst Lumberjacks Friday in an action-packed Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The visiting Lumberjacks opened the scoring near the midway point of the first period when Dylan Garvin picked off a play in the neutral zone then dished off a cross-ice feed over to Cole Shepherdson, who went down the left wing and wired a shot over the shoulder of Voodoos’ starter Cole Vreugdenhil.
Pulling even at 14:02, Krats fired a pass over to Dylan Rousselle in the right circle that he took to the net where he made a couple of moves and tucked the puck into the open side.
Adding another on the next shift, Ryan Saginaw took a play to the slot then dropped it off to Anthony Boyes who whipped a shot through Hearst goalkeeper Alexandre Boivin.
With the primary assist, Saginaw extends a consecutive game point streak to 11 in succession.
Heading to the middle frame, Hearst drew level just after a successful penalty kill that saw veteran forward Mathieu Comeau chip a chance ahead then drove down the left wing and neatly picked the bottom right corner on Vreugdenhil at 14:44 for his 10th tally of the campaign.
On the power play to begin the third period, the visitors clicked when Henry Ouellet was teed up by Ty McKay and cranked in a one-time blast from the right circle 92 seconds in.
Coming back to force extra time, Saginaw sent in a wrister through a crowd in front from the high slot while Powassan was up a skater at 10:57.
In OT, Krats collected the game-winner early as he got the puck off the draw then wheeled into the Hearst end and eventually stuffed in a wraparound between the post and Boivin’s pad to end it.
The result raises the Voodoos’ record to 9-1-0-1 and with a point in the loss, the Lumberjacks fall to 10-3-0-1.
