Lakers Recognized After Outstanding Season
Nipissing University soccer team receives major awards
What a week, what a season and what a run for the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team.
The Lakes are just days away from their first every OUA championship game, will be making their first ever trip to USports nationals next week and on top of that, have a handful of players earning league accolades.
Hannah Neville is the OUA East Division Rookie of the Year, Cassidy Brooks, Taylor Schell and Madison Heeley are OUA First Team All-Stars and Emily Tierney is an OUA Second Team All-Star.
Hannah Neville – Rookie of the Year
Neville impressed the entire OUA in her first campaign, both offensively and transition.
She posted three goals and five assists, good for eight points in 11 games – six of which she started.
She began her career with an assist in her OUA debut against Carleton.
Her first OUA goals came in a win over Trent and finished with two goals and two assists.
She also added a goal and two assists in a victory over RMC during the Homecoming Weekend.
Madison Heeley – First Team All-Star
The last line of defence for the Lakers, Heeley was strong all season providing Nipissing with stability and confidence.
She picked up six wins, allowed just 13 goals and finished the year with 32 saves.
She started nine contests and split a 10th game, wracking up 690 minutes on the pitch.
Taylor Schell – First Team All-Star
An absolute rock in the middle of the pitch for the Lakers, Schell had a strong offensive season and played her usual outstanding defensive play and transition.
She finished with two goals and three assists, suiting up and starting all 12 games for the Lakers this season.
She began the season with four points in the first five games and capped off the season with a goal in the season finale.
She also played a huge role in the Lakers only surrendering 16 goals in 12 games.
Cassidy Brooks – First Team All-Star
Brooks incredible career has another honour to add to it as she's once again named an OUA All-Star.
She finished the season with 10 goals and 1 assist, with her 10 goals putting her fifth in the league despite missing three games.
She also recorded her 30th OUA goal in the process of leading the team in goals and being tied for points.
She started her year with eight goals in the first four games, including two hat-tricks.
She also picked up a multi-point game in a win over RMC.
Emily Tierney – Second Team All-Star
One of the best one-one-one defenders in the league, Tierney was a force for the Lakers all year.
She played and started all 12 games for Nipissing, managed a goal and an assist, but was most noticeable for her strong play holding the backline and relieving any pressure put on by the opposition.
Her speed, tenacity and strength made her a valuable member of the Lakers and as a veteran, she often set the tone for the game with her hardwork.
