Laurel “Sonny” Birtch Jr.
With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the passing of Laurel “Sonny” Birtch Jr., who passed away on March 10, 2026, at the age of 79. Sonny shared a life filled with love alongside his wife, Denise Birtch. Together they built a family that was the center of his world.
He was a proud father to Dereck Birtch (Lynn Birtch), Dave Birtch (Amy Birtch), and Greg Birtch, who predeceased him in 1999. Sonny’s legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren Amanda Birtch (Tyler Doda), Ian Birtch, Megan Birtch, Hunter Birtch (Brianne Nieman), and Hailey Birtch, who brought him immense pride and joy. He was also blessed to see the next generation grow with his great-grandchildren Kaiden Doda, Cora Doda, and Bentley Birtch. Each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Sonny will be lovingly remembered by his siblings Barb Hodgson, Jack Birtch (Mary Birtch), Carrie Ann Birtch, and Nancy Birtch. He was also predeceased by his brother Jim Birtch.
He will be deeply missed by his extended family and many friends who shared in his life over the years. Born on August 22, 1946, Sonny was known for his strong work ethic and took great pride in his career, dedicating many years working at Ontario Hydro. Outside of work, Sonny enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved spending time fishing, golfing, and being outdoors, but nothing meant more to him than time spent with his family.
Sonny’s life was defined by the love he had for those around him. Whether through stories shared, laughter around the table, or quiet moments together, the memories he created will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held at Hillside Funeral Services, 362 Airport Rd, on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Church on Airport Road in North Bay.
Though he may be gone, he will never be gone from our hearts. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply, and the memories we will cherish forever. In lieu of flowers, donations to the North Bay Food Bank or the North Bay Crisis Centre in memory of Sonny will be gratefully acknowledged by his family.
