Let the Judging Begin

The national Communities in Bloom judges arrive in the city on Tuesday.
They’ll be touring various businesses, institutions and more, with notable stops like the waterfront and downtown area, community gardens, and heritage homes.
Over the two-day visit, the local Communities in Bloom committee will be showcasing the city in six categories: community appearance, environmental actions, tree management, heritage conservation, landscape, and plant and floral displays.
Maggie Horsfield, committee co-chair, says any last-minute project residents want to undertake to tidy up their space would be welcome.
“Mow your lawn, weed your walkway or weed the curb if you want,” she says. “What we’ve been doing with Clean, Green, Beautiful since its inception is just encouraging people to do what they can. Whatever you can do to help is more than not doing anything.”
To finish off the two-day tour, the judges will join the community for the Centennial Celebrations Festival at the Kiwanis Bandshell on Wednesday evening (6-9pm).
“It’s an opportunity for the community to come out, learn more about the non-profits that will be set up, meet the judges and have an opportunity to meet other people, enjoy some music and come out and celebrate,” says Horsfield.
Live performances are in partnership with the City of North Bay’s Summer Concert Series, while the community fair includes local nonprofits and service organizations, dedicated to enhancing the beauty and sustainability of the city.
Last year, the city received five blooms in the national population category, with a special mention for Northern Pines, and won the Outstanding Achievement for Community Appearance award.
