This is Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 5-11) and city fire crews are emphasizing the importance of using, charging and recycling lithium-ion batteries safely.

North Bay Fire & Emergency Services says the presence of lithium-ion batteries in many household devices, including smartphones, tablets, e-cigarettes and more, introduces unique fire risks.

Officials say the rechargeable batteries store a lot of energy in a small place, adding they can overheat, start a fire, or explode if overcharged or damaged.

North Bay Fire & Emergency Services is organizing a variety of events during Fire Prevention Week including two Fill-a-Fire Truck events.

Fire crews and the North Bay Food Bank are working together to collect non-perishable food, cash/gift card donations and personal hygiene items.

Tues., Oct. 7 (10 am-6 pm) at Parker’s Your Independent Grocer

Wed., Oct. 8 (10 am-6 pm) at Sobeys Algonquin

The food bank says it supports an average of 540 adults and 264 children a month.

City fire fighters will also be conducting fire drills at all schools in the North Bay area this month.
