Matthew Willars Johnson

Matthew Willars Johnson passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness May 23, 2024 at the North Bay Regional Health Centre, at the age of 68.
Matt was predeceased by his parents Alan and Joyce Johnson. He was the loving father to Annie Johnson (Paul Montreuil) of North Bay, Katie Johnson (Tyler Knip) of Prince Rupert and Emily Johnson (Zachary Bizier) of North Bay. He was grandfather to Kai Doucette. His death is mourned by siblings Kit Johnson (Jan Sullivan) of Calgary, Steve Johnson (Diane Johnson) of North Bay, John Johnson (Eva Moser) of West Vancouver and Marlo Johnson and Mary Ann Johnson, both of North Bay. Jake Johnson (Jane Lu) and Delaney Johnson of North Vancouver survive their Uncle Matt and will miss him dearly. Matt was a special and close cousin to Vicki Prins and Janet MacPhee and their families.
Matt was a man of few words, and an easy smile. He made his way on his own terms and was an intensely loyal friend. In his younger days he raced amateur production class motorcycles and travelled extensively in Canada and the U.S. on his motorcycle. He loved the outdoors, especially canoe trips and time at his cottage on Four Mile Bay. At home Matt enjoyed reading science fiction and listening to musicals but he was happiest spending time with his daughters, including introducing them to horseback riding.
Matt worked throughout Canada as a diamond driller, hard rock miner, and pipeline worker and, later, inspector. Thank you to Matt’s friend Carolyn Hebert whose support cheered him immensely through his illness, and to special friends and neighbours Barb and Tom Laverock.
We are truly grateful to Dr. Stacey for her dedication to Matt’s health and well being, and to the staff of D3 at the North Bay Regional Health Centre for their compassion and patience during his infirmity.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday August 13 from 4 to 6pm at Hillside Funeral Services, 362 Airport Rd, North Bay ON.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made, if desired, to the Humanitarian Coalition or the North Bay and District Humane Society.
