McIvor named Week’s Best

Mike McIvor of the North Bay Battalion has been named Goaltender of the Week for the period ended Sunday, the Ontario Hockey League announced Monday.

McIvor won all three games he started, posting a 1.32 goals-against average and a .956 save percentage as the Battalion played entirely on the road.

On the way to registering 108 saves for the week, McIvor started with a 3-2 Family Day victory Monday over the Ottawa 67’s, making 22 saves. He provided relief Thursday night, stopping 22 of 23 shots in a 5-1 loss to the Saginaw Spirit.

McIvor, who returned to the crease Friday night to record 31 saves in a 4-1 decision over the Flint Firebirds, closed out the week with a 5-1 victory Sunday against the Sarnia Sting, turning aside 33 of 34 shots.

“Mike has given us a chance to win on just about every night he’s played this year, and we’re happy to see him earn this recognition,” said Adam Dennis, president and director of hockey operations.

“He’s continued his high level of play that he established in last year’s playoffs and has been the backbone of this young team’s recent success.”

McIvor, a Warkworth, Ont., resident who turns 19 on March 22, was a fourth-round pick, 83rd overall, in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection from the Quinte Red Devils U16s.

In 36 games this season, he has a 2.82 GAA, a .910 save percentage, two shutouts and a won-lost-extended record of 17-14-2.

His career numbers are 56 games, a 3.12 GAA, a .900 save percentage, three shutouts and a 25-25-2 record.

Pressed into service in the second game of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal last year against the Kingston Frontenacs when Dom DiVincentiis was injured, McIvor played the rest of the way for the Troops, who advanced to the conference final for a third straight season.

He went 10-5 with a 2.68 GAA, a .914 save percentage and one shutout.

McIvor recently was rated 22nd among North American-based goaltenders in midseason rankings issued by the National Hockey League’s central scouting department in anticipation of the NHL Draft at Los Angeles in June.

The Battalion completes a run of six consecutive road games with a visit at 7:07 p.m. Tuesday to the Soo Greyhounds. The game can be seen live in North Bay on YourTV Channels 12 and 700.
