Michael Ohlman

Michael Ohlman

Michael John Herbert Ohlman, age 67, of North Bay, Ontario, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at the Nipissing Serenity Hospice, following a courageous and hard-fought three-year battle with cancer. Mike was in the presence of friends, loved ones the week leading up to his passing.

As per his wishes, there will not be a public funeral. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Hillside Funeral Services.

Mike was born on January 8, 1959 in North Bay, Ontario where he grew up. He graduated from Ecole Secondaire Algonquin and went on to post-secondary studies where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo. He later received his Bachelor of Education from Brock University.

Mike embarked on a long career as a teacher. He taught at several schools in and around North Bay before returning to his alma mater, Ecole Secondaire Catholique Algonquin, where he taught the remainder of his career.

Mike never married. He instead focused his energies on his work and coaching. Mike loved sports, particularly team sports; he also had a soft spot for track and field. As a child, he played baseball, and hockey. As a teen, Mike continued hockey and added football and track and field to his list of sports. Mike played on both city and school teams as a teenager, sometimes playing alongside his younger brother. He was on some successful teams in high school, which likely led him to play footfall for the University of Waterloo. Mike once said that he loved the idea of football because it was the one sport that truly took a team effort; one person cannot lead a team to victory, it takes the team to achieve success.

As a coach, he was passionate about football and track and field throwing sports. He coached several athletes that went on to compete successfully at various levels. From the memorabilia Mike surrounded himself with, small tokens of appreciation from his athletes, one could tell he was well respected by those he coached and with whom he worked.

Mike is survived by his mother June Ohlman (nee Ryan), his brothers and sisters-in-law  Jeffrey Ohlman (Carmen Thierfeldt),  and Stephen Ohlman (Tina Ohlman). He will be lovingly remembered by his nephew Keita Ohlman and his niece Akina Ohlman, and many family and friends.

Mike is predeceased by his father Vince Ohlman and sister Cindy Ohlman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Nipissing Serenity Hospice, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society. The family of Michael John Herbert Ohlman wishes to thank the medical teams and professionals that supported Mike throughout the last three years, notably, the North Bay Regional Health Centre, Health Services North in Sudbury, the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), and the Nipissing Serenity Hospice.
