NHL draft pick Miller among 20 NOJHL alumni who saw OHL action in 2023-24
The number of Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) alumni competing at higher levels continues to flourish.
Of those who saw five, or more, games of on-ice action this past season in the Ontario Hockey League, 20 of them played previously in the NOJHL.
Included in this list is former Soo Thunderbirds netminder Landon Miller, who was also selected late last month by the Detroit Red Wings at the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas.
The towering six-foot-five, 193-pound, Miller was tabbed by the Red Wings, in the fourth round, 126th overall.
He spent the 2022-23 campaign with the Thunderbirds, sporting a 14-5-2-3 record, while posting a 2.29 goals-against average, along with a solid .923 save percentage and two shutouts.
His save mark tied him for third-best in the NOJHL that season.
Among his triumphs, six featured him making 30-plus saves in victories.
He also went 10-6 in the playoffs as a rookie, helping backstop the T-Birds to a West Division title and a berth in the league final.
Another NOJHL alum, and NHL draft choice, in defenceman Andrew Gibson, was recently dealt by Detroit to the Nashville Predators.
Gibson, 19, was named the NOJHL’s Best Defenceman as a member of the Thunderbirds in 2021-22, while going on to earn first team all-star laurels.
The 19-year-old blueliner from Windsor, Ont., was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft, 42nd overall.
He’s coming off a season where he set career highs with the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds in goals (12); assists (32); points (44) and plus-minus (Plus-36).
Of the 20 NOJHL alumni playing in the OHL at various points of 2023-24, they were spread out over seven league-member clubs.
