Nipissing University ready to mark Military Appreciation Night
A couple of Lakers’ Military Appreciation hockey games are coming up in the next few weeks.
Both of the Nipissing teams will wear camouflage jerseys that will be auctioned off after the games.
Col. Joe Oldford, 22 Wing Base Commander, says proceeds from the jersey auction are supporting the Military Family Resource Centre.
“They are all directly focused on supporting the challenges that come with military lifestyle, in our moving around, deployments and short notice taskings that take us away from our families,” he says. “That money directly feeds that support which directly feeds our operational capability which for me is super important.”
Col. Oldford also says there are a lot of similarities between the military and varsity sports.
“Physical fitness, leadership, teamwork. These are things that are core in the business that we do in the military,” he says. “It just translates so well to the sports field and then seeing that represented even more with the jersey, that’s representative of our culture, it feels amazing.”
Over $42,000 has been raised through the games over the past 16 years.
“We are honoured to continue our partnership with 22 Wing CFB North Bay and the Military Family Resource Centre, strengthening our long-standing relationship with the armed forces in our community,” says Dr. Kevin Wamsley, President and Vice-Chancellor of Nipissing University. “This event is an important opportunity to recognize and support the families of those who serve, and we are proud to contribute to this meaningful tradition.”
The third annual women’s game takes place Friday, Jan. 24 with Nipissing at home to Carleton at 6 pm at Memorial Gardens.
On the men’s side, Nipissing’s 14th annual game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 7, against Windsor.
