No injuries in Victoria Street garage fire

By Richard Coffin

The smell of smoke was wafting in the air downtown Wednesday morning as city fire crews battle a garage fire on Victoria Street East.

It’s across the street from the École élémentaire catholique Saint-Vincent property.

With the fire less than a block from Fire Station One, Platoon Chief Tom Heppenstall says they responded before the call came in.

“Garage fire, almost impinged on the house,” he says. “We actually had a visual from the station.  It wasn’t called in so we were just heading over when the call came in.  No one is hurt.  It looks like [the fire] is all in the garage.”

Heppenstall says Fire Prevention will investigate the cause.

“Early reports are he had a new plug-in electric mower so perhaps that,” he says. “But we’ll have fire prevention attend and do an investigation.”

Along with traffic being diverted on Ferguson Street, the 100 block of Victoria Street East is closed while fire crews are on the scene.
