North Bay Fire and Emergency Services is crediting working smoke alarms for saving lives on Tuesday (Sept. 2) night.

Chief Jason Whiteley says the alarms allowed Lorne Ave. tenants and their pet to get out safely, and call for fire services.

Upon arrival Whiteley says crews found heavy fire conditions in the main floor apartment, with the fire already extended into the attic space.

He says crews began attacking the fire inside, while North Bay EMS assessed the evacuated tenants. No one was transported to hospital.

Fire Prevention is currently investigating the origin and the cause of the fire and no dollar loss has been determined yet.

“A working smoke alarm gives you a chance. A chance to wake up. A chance to run. A chance to live,” says Whiteley.

He’s reminding residents to install smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas and to test them monthly.
