NOJHL names its Rogers 3 Stars of the Week
The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that the Greater Sudbury Cubs trio, featuring forwards Briir Long and Mason Walker, along with defenceman Spencer Horgan, have been named the Rogers 3 Stars of the Week, for the period ending April 19.
Briir Long, (F) Greater Sudbury Cubs – Piling up eight points in the first two games of the NOJHL Final, Long has moved the Cubs to within a pair of victories of a third straight league title.
The 18-year-old from Astorville, Ont., racked up two goals and four assists in Game 1 and followed it up with another tally, and a helper, in Greater Sudbury’s Game 2 triumph.
Long, who played part of his minor hockey with the North Bay Trappers U15 AAA side, sits tied for second in NOJHL playoff scoring with 27 points.
Mason Walker, (F) Greater Sudbury Cubs – Riding a league-high 10-game postseason point streak, Walker collected seven last week to give the Cubs the early edge on the Rock in the final.
Skating for his hometown Sudbury side, the 17-year-old dished out five assists in the club’s initial victory in the NOJHL final, then banged in a marker, and aided on another, in the second contest.
Walker, an alumnus of both the Sudbury Wolves and Sudbury Nickel Capitals AAA organizations, joins Long sharing second spot in playoff numbers with 27 points apiece, featuring seven multi-point efforts.
Spencer Horgan, (D) Greater Sudbury Cubs – Contributing key assists in each of first two games against Timmins, Horgan helped do his part at both ends of the ice.
In his last year of Jr. A hockey, the Bowmanville, Ont., blueliner set-up the game-winner, which came shorthanded in the initial match-up, as part of two-point night, then chipped in on another tally in the next contest.
The former Quinte Red Devils U18 AAA standout, currently tops all NOJHL defencemen in offensive postseason production with 15 points in 10 games.
