OPP increasing traffic enforcement this long weekend

The last long weekend of the summer is here with provincial police across the northeast asking drivers to plan ahead, be patient and make safe driving decisions.

The OPP says with increased long weekend traffic comes increased enforcement as they keep tabs on the ‘big four’ causes of collisions and fatalities.

Those include impaired, aggressive and distracted driving along with a lack of seatbelt use.

Officials say the public can help by reporting suspected impaired or dangerous drivers to police, by calling 9-1-1 in an emergency.

They add 214 people have died on OPP-patrolled roads as of mid-August this year.

The OPP says its also counting on boaters, paddlers and off-roaders to use waterways and trails safely.

They say wearing a lifejacket on the water and a helmet on the trail will give you your best chance of surviving a serious incident.
