OPP remind boaters of fall safety risks & tips
An incident late last month on Lake Nipissing has Ontario Provincial Police reminding boaters that fall conditions have arrived.
The OPP says on September 28, the Snowmobile, All Terrain Vehicle and Vessel Enforcement (S.A.V.E.) Team was called to assist a vessel-in-distress on the lake, with two people on board.
Police say both were safe when police arrived, and the water-filled boat was towed to shore.
Officials remind people that the weather, water and wave conditions can quickly change at this time of the year.
With increasingly cooler weather and shorter daytime hours, they says there are additional safety risks to consider prior to departure.
OPP emphasize the importance of safety equipment and wearing your Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and not consuming alcohol or drugs.
For paddle sports, they say consider dry suits for colder water and understand the risks of hypothermia.
Officials also say various safety resources are available from Transport Canada.
