Paralympics opener scheduled for North Bay’s Rob Shaw
Saturday is a big day for North Bay’s Rob Shaw at the Paralympics in Paris.
That’s when he plays his opening match in the wheelchair tennis quad division tournament at Roland-Garros Stadium.
Shaw is ranked eighth in the world and says there are no surprises between him and his opponent, Brazilian Ymanitu Silva, who is ranked 11th internationally.
‘’We’ve played several times together (in doubles),” Shaw says. “We haven’t played against each other since the 2023 Parapan Am Games and that was a tough three-set match. I’m expecting something similar here.’’
He won the silver medal at the 2023 Parapan Am Games and defeated the Brazilian in the semifinals 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Shaw has won his past two tournaments, including the Swiss Open last month, which was his first career win in the ITF1 Series, the highest level in the sport.
‘’As long as I play well as I have been, I’m confident I can come out on top,” says Shaw.
This is his second Paralympics after he competed in Tokyo three years ago.
The opening ceremony for the Paris Paralympics takes place at 1:30 pm on Wed., Aug. 28.
