PFAS remediation work in North Bay being expanded to $122-million

A couple of agreements related to perfluoralkylated substances (PFAS) remediation and water treatment worth over $130 million are coming to council Tuesday night.

One expands the $20 million remediation agreement between the City of North Bay and Department of National Defence (DND) to $122 million and extends the agreement to 2037.

The other deal is worth over $8.2 million and is for two years.

It involves pilot and design work to treat PFAS at the North Bay Drinking Water Plant.

As per the agreements, which were finalized at the end of November, DND would fund 97% of the costs.

“The City received notice of Treasury Board’s approval and received the signed Contribution Agreement from DND on December 2, 2025,” states a staff report.

PFAS are manmade substances found in many consumer and industrial products, including firefighting foam.

“Past use of the airport lands for firefighter training between the early 1970s and mid-1990s has been identified as the main source of PFAS on the airport property,” states the city’s PFAS Information page on its website.

It also says the level of PFAS detected in the city’s municipal water supply remains lower than the interim guidance level provided by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), which regulates drinking water in Ontario.
