Plaque Unveiling to Commemorate Algonquin Regiment Memorial Site

The City of North Bay’s Municipal Heritage Committee will mark an important piece of local history with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 10 a.m.
The plaque, located at the corner of Algonquin Avenue and Jane Street, recognizes the original site of the Algonquin Regiment War Memorial. For many years, members of the Regiment gathered at this location to honour those who served and sacrificed during the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Korean War and the War in Afghanistan. The memorial was relocated to Memorial Park in 2022.
Fittingly, Algonquin Avenue itself bears the name of the Regiment. Formerly known as Klock Avenue, it was renamed in 1948 in honour of the Algonquin Regiment and its contributions to the country.
Mayor Peter Chirico will attend the unveiling ceremony, which coincides with the Regiment’s 125th Anniversary celebrations taking place over the May 3–5 weekend.
Additionally, on Monday, May 5, 2025, a special declaration signing will take place at North Bay City Hall. Mayor Chirico, Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau, and Mayor Ruud van den Belt of Steenbergen, Netherlands — a community liberated by the Algonquin Regiment during the Second World War — will formally recognize the lasting bonds of friendship and remembrance shared between their communities.
“This event honours the profound legacy of the Algonquin Regiment and its deep ties to our City,” said Mayor Chirico.
Members of the public are invited to attend the plaque unveiling ceremony.
