Police assisted by drone in pursuit and drug trafficking arrests

By Richard Coffin

Two people are facing drug trafficking charges after city police seized over $64,000 worth of cocaine on Tuesday.

The North Bay Police Service says shortly before noon, an officer tried to stop a vehicle following a suspended driver alert on an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR).

Police say the driver sped away and was not chased due to public safety.

The vehicle was later found abandoned and stuck in the snow near College Drive.

Both accused were located and tracked through a wooded area with the help of a drone (video below).

“The use of technology enhances our ability to pursue suspects while keeping our community and our officers safer,” says Acting Deputy Chief Jeff Warner. “ALPR and [Remotely Piloted Aircraft System] tools are significantly contributing to successful arrests, and in this case helped us seize another $64,000 worth of cocaine destined for our community.”

A 25-year-old from Newmarket and a 33-year-old from Woodbridge were arrested and held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police also seized about $2,300 in cash and a 2018 BMW sedan.
