Police charge North Bay man with five arson counts

By Richard Coffin

A 30-year-old city man is facing five counts of arson after an investigation into a handful of fires Saturday night.

The North Bay Police Service says between 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm that night there were a series of fires downtown in which couches, a mattress, and garbage bins were set ablaze.

They say the suspect fled each fire but was identified through the investigation, located nearby, and arrested.

“Our Patrol Section worked fast to identify the accused and make an arrest before anyone was injured,” says Acting Deputy Jeff Warner. “Thank you to North Bay Fire and Emergency Services for quickly extinguishing the fires and helping protect our community. Deliberately setting fires puts lives and property at risk, and we will not tolerate this type of behaviour in our community.”

Police say the fires were set at the following locations:
· First Avenue East and Sherbrooke Street
· First Avenue East and Ferguson Street
· 400 block of Second Avenue East
· Cassells Street and McIntyre Street East
· 100 block of Ferguson Street

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
