Police encouraging people and businesses to sign up to CAMSafe

This is CAMSafe Week and area police are drumming up support for the camera and security video registry.
Special constables and auxiliary officers with North East Region Ontario Provincial Police and North Bay Police Service are taking part.
They’re canvassing select neighbourhoods in North Bay and surrounding communities, providing residents and business owners with safety information and resources.
OPP Sgt. Renee Taylor says CAMSafe creates a registry of residents and businesses with security cameras, CCTV systems, or doorbell cameras.
“It allows us a database that is a pivotal role in investigations where it will save us a surmountable amount of time,” she says. “We can reach out to request for support for footage that may likely support and solve crime or find a missing person.”
Sgt. Taylor adds CAMSafe requests only basic contact information and camera locations and does not give police direct access to the cameras.
“It’s a way for the community to work together to support one another through safety,” she says. “It’s like an advanced neighbourhood watch.”
