Powassan Busy at Trade Deadline
The Powassan Voodoos have been busy at the CJHL trade deadline making some moves to improve their forward group.
The Voodoos added a pair of 18-year-old right shot skilled American born forwards as free agents prior to the January 10 deadline.
Ryan Saginaw is making the jump from the non-sanctioned Northern Cyclones of the NCDC in the U.S. where he had one goal and two assists for three points in 17 games this season with the Cyclones.
"I feel this is an opportunity for me to develop my game playing for Coach Peter Goulet and the Powassan Voodoos as Peter has a great reputation in Canada and the U.S. for developing players on to CHL, NCAA and professional hockey," he said.
Goulet is familiar with Saginaw who put up huge offensive numbers last season including 55 goals and 46 assists for 101 points in 55 games with the Pittsburgh U18 AAA Predators. It was the same U18 AAA program former Voodoos forward Ryan Patrick and Dylan McElhinney played with.
Eric Whitelaw, a speedy forward, joins the Voodoos from the U18 AAA Carshield program in St. Louis, Missouri. He started the season with the Renfrew Wolves of the CCHL.
To make room for the American duo, the Voodoos moved big forward Jeremy Schoenborn to the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners for a development fee. The 6'6" forward had two goals and three assists for five points in 21 games this season with Powassan.
Also, forward Nathan Pelletier left the Voodoos to join an NCDC team in the U.S. while Kaleb Ellard will join a team in the USPHL Premier.
Forward Lucas Gunner was also released by the club prior to the CJHL January 10 cutdown date and he has been picked up by the Blind River Beavers of the NOJHL.
