Powassan skates to shutout win in Iroquois Falls
The Powassan Voodoos saw Ryan Saginaw score twice, including picking up his team-leading seventh game-winning goal, while Derrick Champagne registered his Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-best fourth shutout of the season as part of a 6-0 triumph over the Iroquois Falls Storm Sunday afternoon at Jus Jordan Arena.
The lone tally of the opening 20 minutes was provided by a man advantage effort courtesy of Saginaw as he ripped one into the open corner on Iroquois Falls’ starter Lucas Cardiff-Bilodeau at 7:16.
Moving to the middle frame, the Voodoos built their lead to 2-0 thanks to Benjamin Coupal converting from the right side with a snap shot on a delayed penalty call.
Another courtesy of Saginaw upped the Powassan edge to three as he wheeled to the middle and sent an attempt to the target that clipped off a defender, changed direction, and went high on Cardiff-Bilodeau.
The Voodoos then tacked on another in the final seconds of the stanza when Heath Bradley finished off a pass from down low by Coupal at 19:47.
Finishing it off in the third, Powassan got two more in the latter stages of the contest when defenceman Braeden Begley clicked on a power play while driving down the middle and ripping one in blocker side before Pavel Barclay wired one upstairs as he darted down the left wing at even strength to round out the scoring.
With the outcome, the Voodoos raise their overall record to 32-13-1-2 and in defeat, the Storm sink to 14-30-2-3.
Both clubs are back at it Friday as Powassan hosts the first place Greater Sudbury Cubs at 7 p.m. at the Sportsplex and Iroquois Falls entertains the Espanola Paper Kings in a 7:30 p.m. start back at Jus Jordan.
