Powassan slips past Blind River

A couple of primary assists supplied by Caleb Dawson, including one on the game-winner, aided in a 3-2 Powassan Voodoos triumph over the Blind River Beavers Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Taking the lead eight and a half minutes into the proceedings, the Voodoos connected while shorthanded when Dawson sent a pass, from below the goal line up-ice that found a streaking Caden Dubreuil, who raced in alone on a breakaway and wired a shot past the blocker of Beavers’ netminder Bronx Bodnar.

The helper for Dawson gives him points in five straight outings.

Answering with an equalizer at 13:58, Blind River’s Keenan Conn came down the right wing and flipped a play to the top of the crease that was knocked in by a hard-charging A.J. Saadeh, who etched his name on the game sheet for a fourth consecutive contest.

Still knotted at one into the second stanza, Powassan retook the lead midway through when Jack Nolan took a drop pass from Dawson and drove down the slot before wiring in his 12th tally of the campaign.

With the scoreline remaining 2-1 Voodoos into the third, the hosts extended their cushion at 3:45 thanks to Anoushan Mungunthan, who chopped in a backhander, generated off of a Beavers’ turnover.

Matching that, Blind River’s Ryder Hill wheeled out from the side boards and while skating to the slot, put in an attempt through traffic with 10:35 to play.

Getting Bodnar out late for an additional skater, the Beavers pressed to tie it, but Powassan stymied any attempt the visitors had to preserve the victory.
