Project Opel a Success

Details emerged Tuesday after a string of bank robberies around Ontario came to an end in Field, just north of Sturgeon Falls this summer.

Ontario Provincial Police have arrested four suspects, while one remains at large.

They’re all from Southern Ontario.

The OPP says between December 8, 2022, and March 16 this year, there were eight bank robberies in areas policed by the OPP and police services in Barrie, Belleville, Durham, Niagara and York Region.

Different masks and clothes were worn in each incident with a handgun displayed in all of them.

Investigators say more than $2 million was stolen and has not yet been recovered.

They say three suspects were arrested during an attempted robbery in Field in June with the fourth arrested in Vaughan in September.

The fifth suspect has been charged and is wanted by police.
