Project Zero helping residents improve fire safety
North Bay Fire and Emergency Services continues to help area residents who are most in need to improve their home safety.

They’ve taken part in the Project Zero – Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Program since 2024.
The public safety initiative developed by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Enbridge Gas provides selected Ontario fire departments with combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to distribute at no cost.

In North Bay, Project Zero supports higher risk residents who own and live in single family dwellings, including seniors, people living alone, people with disabilities, and families experiencing financial challenges.
Last year, Project Zero supplied 123 combination alarms with fire prevention staff also given the opportunity to visit homes, identify potential hazards, install alarms in the appropriate locations and speak directly with residents about practical ways to reduce fire and carbon monoxide risks.
During one visit, they found a single 44-year-old smoke alarm on the first storey, with no alarms in the basement, second or third floors.
Fire Prevention staff replaced the outdated device with a new 10-year combination alarm and installed additional alarms in the proper locations.
They also identified fire safety concerns with a dryer exhaust duct, which were corrected shortly after their visit.
Residents who believe they may be eligible for the program can call 705-474-0626 ext. 4800 or email fireinfo@northbay.ca
