Raises Nearly $10,000 for Cancer Care at NBRHC

Anita Couchie Memorial Charity Golf Tournament
Brian Couchie, along with friends and family, hosted the Anita Couchie Memorial Charity Golf Tournament July 12, 2025 at Laurentide Golf Course. Generous sponsors, golfers and donors helped raise nearly $10,000 supporting cancer care for our community at North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC).
“On New Year’s Eve in 2013, my wife Anita, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. It is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. It was painful. While fighting this disease, Anita never complained. The nurses and support staff in the Chemotherapy Unit did an excellent job of making it as pleasant as possible. I wanted to do this tournament in my great appreciation to the nurses and staff working in cancer care at North Bay Regional Health Centre,” said Brian Couchie.
Each year, more than 1,200 people in our area are diagnosed with cancer. The journey for many patients is difficult and challenging. Early diagnosis and treatment are important. NBRHC plays an important role in the care of patients with cancer, providing screening, diagnoses, treatment and support for patients with cancer, close to home. This included lab tests, diagnostic scans (MRI, CT and SPECT/CT), chemotherapy, surgery, pain management, rehabilitation and end of life care.
In addition, NBRHC is home to the second largest Chemotherapy Unit in northeast Ontario. Last year, the unit hosted nearly 4000 appointments and provide almost 2900 chemotherapy treatments.
Proceeds from the tournament are supporting the purchase of an AI Imaging software for Mammography. This advanced technology enhances the detection of breast lesions by using artificial intelligence algorithms to identify and mark areas of concern, assess breast density, and improve overall diagnostic sensitivity.
State-of-the-art medical equipment purchases are only possible through the strength of the partnership between the government, hospital and our community. Every year, businesses, individuals, families, and groups donate in many ways: through monthly and memorial gifts, contributions in Wills, corporate sponsorships, and multi-year commitments. Together, donations large and small are making a meaningful difference - supporting exceptional healthcare, close to home.
