Red bag campaign collects thousands of pounds of food locally

The North Bay Food Bank is receiving nearly 7,500 pounds of donated food thanks to the Purolator Tackle Hunger® National Red Bag campaign.

The second annual event was held in North Bay late last month.

Volunteers dropped off red bags around the area on September 21, with residents asked to fill up their bags with non-perishable food items.

They were then asked to leave the bags on their doorsteps on September 28 for collection by Purolator couriers.

“We put the call out to 15 communities across the country to support our second annual Purolator Tackle Hunger National Red Bag campaign and they showed incredible generosity,” says John Ferguson, President and CEO, Purolator.

Food Banks Canada is thanking the company for its support.

“Each day, people across the country are making the heart-wrenching decision of whether to eat, pay rent, forgo another basic essential,” says Kirstin Beardsley, Chief Executive Officer Food Banks Canada.  “Thanks to your support, not only through this campaign but also your financial contributions and in-kind shipping support, food banks across the country can help the most vulnerable in their communities.”

Last year’s inaugural campaign saw 1,200 pounds of food collected locally.
