Snowmobilers reminded to stay off private property

All of the recent snow may be a welcome sight to snowmobilers, but at least one area club is reminding enthusiasts to respect private property.

The West Nipissing Snowmobile Club (WNSC) says a landowner in Lavigne is threatening to close a trail because of trespassers playing in their fields, close to their house.

“It is essential that we respect private property owners, as failure to do so may result in the loss of multiple trails and unhappy permit holders,” reads a post on social media. “As a club, we face sufficient challenges with landowners and do not wish to risk losing anything for the WNSC.”

The sled in question is described as very noisy, with a blue headlight, and was with another sled, which was also described as loud.

Other than a couple trails with ‘limited availability’ in the Hearst area, OPP Sergeant Ryan Lehr says Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club (OFSC) trails have not yet been opened to the public.

“We haven’t had a chance to properly assess what type of hazards are out there,” says Lehr.  “OFSC has to prepare the trails and clear any downed trees.  Remember, there’s other unknown hazards that you may not be aware of such as hydro lines that are down, Paige wire fencing through fields.”

The province’s network of trails spans 30,000 km.
