Another graduating Voodoos player is taking a step forward in hockey development as forward Rhys Smetham has signed a three-year deal to play for the Bristol Pitbulls of the NIHL National League in England.

Smetham, who was born in England, played two seasons with the Voodoos scoring 16 goals and adding 21 assists for 37 points in 2023-24 for the Voodoos.

“Having the opportunity to come back to the area, being able to work here and continuing my journey in hockey was always the ideal plan,” said Smetham who moved to Canada when he was four.

“I was born in Trowbridge and always wanted to return and couldn’t be happier to be doing so.Hopefully I can make a seamless transition from Junior hockey in Canada to men’s hockey here.I’ve heard it is a very competitive league with some very talented players so I’m excited to see how I compare against them. I’m a physical player, using my body as I can and I’m a player that loves to play in the offensive zone.”

The Pitbulls say Smetham will be training and beginning the season with the team in the National League but will be on a two-way contract with the Pitbulls 2s.

The Voodoos have already moved Cameron Lemcke, Dylan McElhinny, Alex Little, Zach Turner, Tucker Shields, and Carson Ricci to college hockey, but Smetham is the first Voodoos player since Rico Rossi in 2019 to make the jump from junior ‘A’ to pro hockey in Europe.

“Rhys been nothing but great since his arrival two years ago, he comes from a great family and he will do very well for the Bristol Pitbulls,” said Peter Goulet, Voodoos head coach.

“Everyone in our organization is happy for Rhys and we wish him the best. Best of luck Bristol got a good one there.”
