Saginaw shines in Voodoos triumph vs. Beavers

Led by a four-goal performance from Ryan Saginaw, the Powassan Voodoos skated to a well-deserved 6-1 victory versus the Blind River Beavers in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter Saturday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Going to work on the night’s initial power play, the Voodoos used that to open the scoring when Braeden Begley sent a pass across to Saginaw in the left circle where he wired a short-side sizzler past Beavers’ netminder Mason Janicki to extend a point streak to 10 games in the process.

Another while up a skater late in the frame saw Janicki make a point-blank stop on an Anthony Boyes blast, but the rebound went right to Saginaw who pumped in his second of the session and 25th overall.

Up by a pair into period No. 2, Powassan extended their cushion with five minutes remaining in the session as defeneman Ben Gisonni led a rush up the left wing and snapped in his first NOJHL goal with a rising wrister.

Adding to their cushion in the third period, Saginaw hit his hat trick by spinning in front and depositing a chance off a Bruce Grey attempt from the blueline.

Blind River eventually solved the Voodoos’ Derrick Champagne off a rush up-ice, as Ilian Danilov took a drop pass from Ryder Hill and got just enough of the shot that found its way into the net at 6:58.

Completing his big night, an open Saginaw swatted in a rebound off a Marcus Krats attempt with seven minutes to go.

Grey then wrapped up the scoring on a five-on-three when he wired a shot upstairs into the top right corner.

With the win, Powassan improves to 25-10-1-2 and with the loss, Blind River falls to 12-24-0-4.
