Nipissing University welcomes Dr. El Jones

In celebration of International Women’s Week, Nipissing University welcomes Halifax-based scholar, poet, journalist and activist, Dr. El Jones

In celebration of International Women’s Week, Nipissing University’s Department of Gender Equality & Social Justice invites the community to attend a free, virtual keynote address by Halifax-based scholar, poet, journalist and activist, Dr. El Jones on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

A professor at Mount Saint Vincent University in Nova Scotia, Dr. Jones’ work focuses on social justice issues such as feminist anti-racism, prison abolition, and decolonization. Her published works include Abolitionist Intimacies and Live from the Afrikan Resistance!

Dr. Jones’ upcoming talk, entitled Abolition for All, will explore Black feminist politics of abolition and why we must include non-human animals in freedom movements. Looking at the non-consensual use of animals in state violence, she examines the relationship between settler colonialism, race, and anti-animalism and explores visions of freedom that also include solidarities with non-human beings.

“We are honoured to be working with Dr. Jones to offer the Nipissing University and broader communities the opportunity to learn from her expertise in feminism, anti-racism, and decolonization as part of International Women’s Week,” said Dr. Leslie Thielen-Wilson, Assistant Professor of Gender Equality and Social Justice at Nipissing University.

This free talk can be access via Zoom at: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_C3XHYAnQRK2VaYWX_zjxfA
