‘Seize this moment’

Calling on the province to ‘seize this moment’ with northern highway expansion
The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities says momentum is growing around its call for northern highway expansion.
FONOM is urging the province to ‘seize this moment’ and include the twinning and 2+1 model for Highways 11 and 17 in Ontario’s Northern Highway Strategy and its submission to the Federal Government’s Major Projects Office list.
“Safe and modern highways are not just about getting from point A to point B. They are about saving lives, enabling industry, and securing long-term prosperity for Northern communities,” says Danny Whalen, FONOM President. “Premier Ford’s vision for nation-building through resource development and clean energy must be matched by reinvestment in the corridors that make those projects possible.”
The group says the project represents a critical investment in safety, connectivity, and economic growth for Northern Ontario.
FONOM says it has formed a coalition to advance the priority.
They’ve also met with officials from the federal Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, and multiple province-wide associations.
