Shoot for Change anti-racism game returns Friday for fifth year
Friday, January 30, at the R.J. Surtees Athletics Centre

The Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression (NUBASE) and Lakers Basketball invite the community to the 5th annual With1VoiceNight: Shoot for Change Anti-Racism Game on Friday, January 30, at the R.J. Surtees Athletics Centre against the University of Guelph Gryphons.

Created in 2022 by Laker alumnus and NUBASE Co-Founder, Taijon Eccleston-Graham, Shoot for Change provides students a platform to advocate for marginalized communities, while raising funds for student bursaries.

“We look forward to bringing the community together in advocacy and Lakers spirit,” said Simbarashe Musewe, President of NUBASE. “It is an honour to be able to celebrate the fifth anniversary of a game that has provided a powerful platform to raise awareness about racism and make a difference in the lives of BIPOC students.”

Tip-off for the women’s game is at 6 p.m., with the men’s team following at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, students, and all Nipissing staff, alumni and faculty who present their Nipissing ID card. The event is free for children under the age of 12 and Nipissing students who present their student ID.  All funds raised will support the Warren Lindsay Bursary.

The Warren Lindsay Bursary was established following the success of the inaugural Shoot for Change game and is awarded annually to a student at Nipissing University who identifies as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) and demonstrates financial need.

“Nipissing University is proud to partner once again with NUBASE to provide a voice for marginalized communities and expand opportunities for BIPOC students at Nipissing through increased financial support,” shared Dr. Kevin Wamsley, President and Vice-Chancellor at Nipissing University. “This event exemplifies the positive impact and energy that student-led initiatives bring. We look forward to seeing the community fill the stands.”
