Signalized intersection at Elmwood recommended in Algonquin safety review

There are three key recommendations after a road safety review of Algonquin Avenue between the Highway 11/17 bypass and Lansdowne Avenue.

The city says the review was completed in response to concerns about pedestrian safety and collisions.

“Potential solutions, including a pedestrian signal and crossover, were explored but ultimately not recommended due to site conditions and provincial guidelines,” states a release.

Recommendations include:

  • creating a new signalized intersection at Elmwood Avenue to provide a safer, controlled crossing point for pedestrians
  • restricting left turns at Maplewood Avenue to reduce the risk of uncontrolled turns
  • restricting left turns just south of the Norwood Avenue and Lansdowne Avenue intersection to improve traffic flow and reduce unexpected stops

A public open house is being held on Tuesday, Oct 28 in the lobby of city hall, from 4-6 pm with city staff and consultants available to answer questions and gather feedback.

While the recommendations will be presented to Council later that evening, officials say feedback from the open house will help refine the recommendations before they are formally presented to Council.
