SIU Terminates Investigation
The province’s police watchdog has terminated an investigation into the injury of a 44-year-old man while he was detained in a police cell at the Ontario Provincial Police’s Nipissing West Detachment.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says the man was arrested at his home in Cache Bay on July 5, in connection with a domestic disturbance.
After being taken to the detachment and put in a cell, officials say a short time later, the man punched a window of the cell and fractured his right hand.
The SIU says the man alone was responsible for his injury and left nothing to investigate as far as potential criminal liability of any police officer.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
