By Richard Coffin

We’ll get a preview this weekend of one of the competitions being featured during next year’s Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games in North Bay.

A snowshoeing provincial qualifier takes place on Saturday.

Athletes are competing for the opportunity to advance to next January’s winter games, with the public invited to cheer them on.

Saturday’s opening ceremony takes place at 9:30 am at the Nipissing University Student Union on College Drive.

The competition begins a half hour later with the awards ceremony at 4 pm.

The 2027 Provincial Winter Games, being hosted by the North Bay Police Service, will bring Special Olympics athletes from across Ontario to the city.

They’ll be competing in alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, curling, and figure skating.

Officials say the games will celebrate inclusion, determination, and community spirit, while athletes look to advance to national and international competitions.
