St. Joseph students working with graffiti artist on mural project

By Richard Coffin

Two permanent murals are taking shape this week at École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph in Sturgeon Falls.

Officials with Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord say it’s a collaborative effort involving students in Grades 5 to 8 and Franco-Ontarian graffiti artist Mique Michelle, who is originally from Field.

Inspired by students’ ideas and personal stories, the board says the two murals will celebrate Franco-Ontarian cultures, roots from near and far, the richness of Northern Ontario, local wildlife, traditions connected to the land, and the values that shape daily life at the school and bring the community together.

One will be created by the artist and located in the school’s main foyer while students will take part in creating the other mural on the school’s second floor.

Officials say through the creation of these two permanent works of art, students will leave a lasting artistic and cultural legacy that highlights the importance of the French language, faith, inclusion, reconciliation and a sense of belonging within their community.
