Text scam prompts warning from North Bay Police

City police say North Bay does not have photo radar, all speeding tickets are issued in person, and the city doesn’t issue traffic-related fines via text message.

The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) is warning the public about a new scam involving fraudulent text messages, that falsely claim to be from Service Ontario.

Police say reports have identified recent text messages that contain fake Service Ontario web links, demand payment for alleged photo radar offences and threaten other actions, including driver’s licence suspension, credit score impacts, demerit points, and more.

NBPS also says the fraudulent messages are sent from changing phone numbers that originate outside Canada.

People are urged not to click any links and do not send any money.

Any suspicious activity can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online: https://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or by phone: 1-888-495-8501 (Mon–Fri, 9am–4:45pm)
