Theft suspect chased down by off-duty police inspector
A city police inspector is being heralded for his ‘unwavering‘ commitment to the safety of our community.
The North Bay Police Service says on Sunday, Inspector Scott McFarlane was off duty and saw a man being chased by staff from a local retailer on the 300 block of Lakeshore Drive.
Police say McFarlane followed the man, caught up with him nearby, and placed him under arrest, adding the accused resisted and attempted to strike the off-duty inspector.
They say merchandise believed to have been taken from the store was also recovered.
“With more than 30 years of policing behind him, the quick actions of Inspector McFarlane in recognizing a problem and acting quickly and decisively to intervene demonstrate that policing is more than a 9-to-5 job for him,” says A/Deputy Chief Jeff Warner. “He has the heart and commitment of a true cop and continues to find satisfaction in keeping our community safe and holding those who commit crimes accountable. His dedication to his profession and the safety of our community is unwavering.”
The accused is charged with theft under $5,000, resist a peace officer and fail to comply with a probation order.
He was released on an undertaking with a future court date.
