Thunderbirds double up Voodoos

A James Elliot goal deep into the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Soo Thunderbirds went on to defeat the Powassan Voodoos 4-2 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Visiting Sault Ste. Marie took the lead when Gage Evans took a cross-ice pass from Bryan Fenlon and moved to the top of the left circle where he ripped a shot past Powassan netminder Tyson Wilcox.
Coming back to tie it, Caden Dubreuil chipped in a loose puck laying at the top of the crease that the Thunderbirds’ Noah Metivier could not control, 13 minutes in, for his 20th tally of the season.

Retaking the lead before the first intermission, the Soo’s Jonathan Sonedecker knocked down a clearing attempt and proceeded to wire in a short-side sizzler for his team-leading 21st goal.
Answering with an equalizer in the second period, the Voodoos’ Jack Nolan spotted teammate Caleb Dawson slipping in the back door with a crisp feed that was promptly buried at 4:30.

Going back on top 11 minutes later the T-Birds Elliot took a drop pass from Camden Cowan and pumped it in from the right circle.
Heading to the third, the Soo got some insurance with 4:05 to go when Fenlon put one towards the net that deflected in, which proved to be the night’s final tally before time expired.

The same two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon in a 2 p.m. start back at the Sportsplex.
