Tiny home development proposal for Sunset Boulevard

Tiny home development proposal for Sunset Boulevard

A proposed development involving a number of so-called tiny homes is coming to city hall next week.

A special committee meeting on Tuesday evening (5:15 pm) includes a public meeting on the rezoning proposal for Sunset Boulevard.

The proposal would see ten tiny homes built.

“The proposed new dwelling units would measure approximately 37 square metres each (approximately 400 square feet),” states a report from Peter Carello, city senior planner.

His report goes on to say this will create new home ownership opportunities for the community.

“By creating different forms of residential units, the local housing inventory will be attractive to and will be financially viable to a wider range of individuals,” Carello says in the report.  “As noted, the proposed application would facilitate the development of a new form of residential development that is not otherwise available elsewhere in the community.”

Most of the neighbour concerns deal with parking and traffic issues while one questions the demographics of future residents.

The staff report says the property was originally rezoned in 2013 to allow for the construction of an apartment building.

But the report goes on to say a detailed site analysis determined an apartment structure wasn’t feasible, based on soil conditions and proximity to the lake.
