Trail development underway

In south end of the city
Construction of a new multi-use gravel path connecting Champlain Park at the end of Premier Road to the Omischl Sports Complex on Lakeshore Drive is underway.
Along with connecting two high-use park areas, the city says the multi-year project will create safer, more accessible routes for walking, cycling, and other recreational uses.
“The trail is being built with a focus on preserving mature trees, using portions of the old trail to help achieve this, and replanting any small trees that must be removed in suitable nearby locations,” states a post on social media. “Community-installed birdhouses are being avoided, and a buffer between the trail and the nearby La Vase River will be maintained. Additionally, culverts are being added to replace bridges and planks over low-lying areas, improving overall accessibility.”
Officials say work is currently taking place from the Champlain Park end of the trail and is expected to wrap up early next month, then continue next year.
They say the trail will remain closed during construction for safety reasons.
