Two council seats declared vacant in Callander
Callander council has officially declared two of its five seats vacant, including the mayor’s chair.
This after the resignations of Mayor Robb Noon and Councillor Irene Smit last month.
Specifics on the resignations haven’t been detailed, but Interim Mayor Jordy Carr told council on Tuesday night they acknowledge the ‘significant public interest’, adding they’re awaiting an Integrity Commissioner’s report. “What I can say is that council has been acting on legal advice, fulfilling its statutory responsibilities and prioritizing the stability of the municipality and wellbeing of staff,” she says. “Once the Integrity Commissioners report is released, council will provide an appropriate update. Until then our focus remains on maintaining stable and effective municipal operations."
Council must fill the vacant seats within 60 days, which is March 14.
A staff report says options include appointing someone from the 2022 election candidates or someone known to council, opening an application process, or holding a byelection.
Staff don’t recommend going to the polls.
They say it can take 75–105 days, costs between $8,000 and $12,000 plus staff time and lower turnout is likely.
The next general municipal election is scheduled for Oct. 26.
