Storm strike late to clip Voodoos

Jack Jarvis’ first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League goal, coming with 45 seconds remaining in regulation, lifted the Iroquois Falls Storm to a narrow 2-1 win over the Powassan Voodoos Sunday afternoon at Jus Jordan Arena.

The visiting Voodoos began the scoring during an early power play that saw Caden Dubreuil get a piece of a Jackson Smith attempt from the left point, that changed direction just enough to elude Storm starter Matis Bureau-Morel.

Iroquois Falls had a great chance to tie it when Jordan Mayo was awarded a penalty shot after getting hooked late in the first period.

However, Powassan netminder Tyson Wilcox outwaited Mayo before making a solid pad save to keep the guests in front.

Going to the middle frame, the home side drew level when Storm captain Andre Cho darted down the right wing then made a strong cross-crease power move and neatly tucked in the equalizer.

Remaining even and tight-checking throughout, Iroquois Falls prevented overtime by connecting late into the contest to pull out a dramatic triumph in the well-played affair.

On the play, the Storm’s Remi Gendron used a solid forecheck along the side boards in the Powassan end, and after working the puck free, sent it to the high slot where a waiting Jarvis snapped it into the top left-hand corner before a diving Wilcox could get across to keep it out.

Iroquois Falls (2-1) returns to the ice Friday as they visit Kirkland Lake while Powassan (1-3) is back at it Saturday when they host French River.
